Description
Raimond-Roger Trencavel, born in 1185 and died on , was a member of the House of Trencavel. He was Viscount of Albi, Ambialet and Béziers (fiefs held by the Count of Toulouse), and Viscount of Carcassonne and Razès (fiefs held by the Count of Barcelona, who was at the same time King of Aragon). He was one of the heroes and early victims of the Albigensian Crusade. Raimond-Roger Trencavel had adopted a liberal attitude to religious matters among the lords of Languedoc. He was the most compromised of the region’s great vassals. Tolerant, he relied on the Jewish community to administer Béziers, his capital and principal fief in order of importance.
